Magic 2012 Planeswalkers

Folks, this most recent promotional video reveals something that's been a huge point of debate for a while now, and I'm glad to see that it's officially over.  The Gideon Jura shown at the end of that Duels of the Planeswalkers ad is the very same Gideon Jura from Rise of the Eldrazi, only with the M12 set symbol.  In other words, Gideon Jura is going to be reprinted, in all of his turns-into-a-creature glory.  While the cards themselves behind Gideon were covered, their artwork was displayed at the end of the ad, leading most all to believe that all of the other walkers will be repeats of their 1.0 versions, and I personally think that's safe to assume.  I've felt ever since the fab five were first announced that this would be the case, and I'm glad to see that I should be right.

What's interesting in that video is how Gideon is the focal point of the M12 ad, not Jace, when the hundred dollar bill has been the poster boy of the franchise for a while now.  It makes sense, since Gideon played a huge role in forming the alliance according to the storyline behind the game for you vorthos players out there, but part of me wonders if the change was made because of the bad rep that Jace has been getting for the past couple years now.

It's been known for a while that Nicol Bolas will be THE archenemy in DotP 2012, but with such a huge focus on that fight in the ad, it makes me wonder if a sixth planeswalker will make his way into the core set.  Either as a 1.0 or 2.0, he's got a good chance of showing up and making M12 the first set to have more than five planeswalkers.  Whether or not he shows in paper magic, he's sure to appear in DotP, especially because of the scheme that tutors for a planeswalker.  Because of his iconic nature, both to older players and now to newer, it seems likely to me that Bolas will show up in some form.  The upcoming Ajani VS Nicol Bolas duel decks will use Bolas 1.0 and Ajani Vengeant, as the two appeared when they faced off at the end of the Shards of Alara block.  Some have their own opinions on how this affects the M12 lineup, but the Duel Decks are more about flavor than anything else, and I doubt it will have much impact.

In any case, I'm much happier knowing that I can hold onto my Gideons indefinitely without them losing too much value.  This is Yo Mama saying so long and thanks for all the fish.
